“Coal’s Assault on Human Health” provides a new assessment of the devastating impacts of coal on the human body.  The report examines the impact of coal pollution from all stages of the coal life cycle on the major body organ systems: respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous system.  The report also considers coal’s contribution to global warming, and the health implications of global warming on vulnerable human populations.  The report includes five specific policy recommendations, and will be jointly released by PSR, the American Lung Association and the American Nurses Association.

ABOUT PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (PSR)

Founded in 1961 by physicians concerned about the impact of nuclear proliferation, PSR shared the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War for building public pressure to end the nuclear arms race.  Since 1991, when PSR formally expanded its work by creating its environment and health program, PSR has addressed the issues of global warming and the toxic degradation of our environment.  PSR educates and advocates for  policies to curb global warming, ensure clean air, generate a sustainable energy future, prevent human exposures to toxic substances, and minimize toxic pollution of air, food, and drinking water.  More information is available at www.psr.org.

Global Union Corporation: Communication Workers of America Leader, U.S., German Workers

President Larry Cohen of the Communications Workers of America will outline the next step in globalization--a joint union between CWA and ver.di, the European union at Deutsche Telekom/TMobile, to represent workers on both sides of the Atlantic, at a National Press Club Newsmakers press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Broadcast Operations Center, Suite 480, National Press Building, 529 14th St., N.W., Washington, D.C.

Union leaders say the goal of the new TUnion is to overcome the double-standard between how European companies treat workers in their home countries and their workforces in the United States. In this new model, CWA works with members and telecom workers here, and ver.di is responsible for relations with the company.

John Logan, director of research at the Berkeley Labor Center at the University of California, will join Cohen. An expert in U.S. labor law and labor law in other industrialized countries, Logan’s latest research examines how Deutsche Telekom’s U.S. subsidiary, TMobile, violates the company’s own code of conduct and policies in ways that would be completely unacceptable in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

A DT worker from Germany and a U.S.-based TMobile worker also will participate in the event. The TMobile worker’s appearance will be disguised to protect his identity. TMobile, as Logan has documented, is aggressively anti-union and routinely intimidates and harasses workers who seek union representation.

The Newsmaker participants say that when European companies open shop in the United States they often jettison the European model and employ workers at low wages with few benefits and hire “union avoidance” consultants to engage in practices that would be condemned in the employer’s home country.
