New rules at the Federal Communications Commission make data that's always been public about who is buying TV airtime during campaigns easier to access. Instead of having to visit the offices of every TV station to look at paper records, stations are starting to be required to provide electronic copies that the FCC is posting online.

Kathy Kiely, managing editor of the Sunlight Foundation, will discuss how to find the reports, what is in them that you can't get from the Federal Election Commission, and what's not yet being posted online.

Kiely and colleague Josh Hatch also will discuss the effort Sunlight is helping to lead to recruit journalists and volunteers around the country to add to records that are currently not online, and put them in a searchable database.

And Kiely will be happy to walk folks through Political Party Time, which tracks fund-raising events, and Sunlight tools for following campaign money, lobbying and for getting legislative and FEC filing alerts.

The free program starts 9:30 on Aug. 15 at the National Press Club and is part of the election boot camp series for reporters sponsored by the Regional Reporters Association, the club's professional development committee and the National Press Club Journalism Institute.
