Army Corps of Engineers to Discuss Sandy Recovery Program in 2014,
New Round of Beach Construction Projects in Northeast

Washington, DC – Army Corps of Engineers Brig. Gen. Kent Savre will update media on the Corps’ progress on post-Hurricane Sandy repair, cleanup and prevention projects at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference on Wednesday, May 21 at 10 a.m. in the club’s Zenger Room. He will also provide information on an ongoing study to determine how best to reduce flood and storm damage risks for people and communities along the North Atlantic coast.

To date, the Corps has completed repairs on dozens of Sandy-damaged navigation channels and structures, has completed restoration of 17 engineered beach projects along the coast, and is actively working over 100 other projects to reduce the risk of future coastal storm damage.

In 2014, the Army Corps will complete its remaining work along the Atlantic coast to restore previously constructed beach projects to their authorized dimensions and start work on a program of 18 new engineered beach projects in areas that previously did not have federally funded risk-reduction systems. These 18 new projects, including a large portion of the New Jersey coast, will complement the previously constructed beach projects and reduce risk to areas that were vulnerable when Sandy hit.

In total, the upcoming coastal program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division, which Savre heads, is the largest beach-building program the Army Corps has ever undertaken.

Like all Newsmakers events, this news conference is open to credentialed media and National Press Club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.

The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20045.
