D.C. Government Transparency to be Explored at Sunshine Week Event
Washington, Feb. 22--Celebrating Sunshine Week 2013, the National Press Club’s Freedom of the Press Committee will join with the D.C. Open Government Coalition to present the second annual “D.C. Open Government Summit” on March 13 from 6 to 8:30pm in the National Press Club’s Holeman Lounge.
This event will focus on the state of government transparency in the District of Columbia and it will provide an opportunity for citizens to weigh in. The D.C.Open Government Coalition (www.dcogc.org) will share results of its recent open meetings audit, surveying compliance across D.C. agencies. Discussing the audit will be Robert Spagnoletti, chairman of the newly established Board of Ethics and Government Accountability, which oversees the not-yet-established D.C. Open Government Office. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) will participate in a question-answer session on the state of transparency in D.C. government. Finally, the event will feature a conversation with V. David Zvenyach, general counsel to the D.C. Council, regarding the council’s recent settlement with the D.C. OGC of FOIA litigation over access to councilmembers’ emails.
The event is open and free to all, but pre-registration is requested at LINK. A reception will follow the program.
The D.C. Open Government Coalition works to enhance the public’s access to government information and ensure the transparency in the D.C. government. The event is also co-sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists’ D.C. Professional Chapter and American University School of Communications’ Journalism Division.
