HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER STENY HOYER AT NATIONAL PRESS CLUB, MON., DEC. 13, 9:30 AM NEWSMAKER NEWS CONFERENCE;
EXPECTED TO DISCUSS ELECTION IMPACT, CONGRESSIONAL AGENDA, TRANSITION, DEMOCRATIC ROLE IN NEW POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT

(Washington, DC) – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) will be the National Press Club Newsmaker at a News Conference at 9:30 AM Monday, December 13. Hoyer is expected to discuss the election impact, the congressional agenda, the lame duck session, the transition, governing under a new Congress, and the Democratic role in the new political environment in the House. The National Press Club is at 14th and F Streets, NW, 529 14th Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20045, in the National Press Building. The event will be in the Lisagor Room, 13th floor.

As House Majority Leader—to which he was elected by his Democratic colleagues in 2006 and 2008—Congressman Hoyer is charged with scheduling and managing the passage of legislation on the House Floor, helping House Democrats determine their legislative agenda, and delivering the Democratic message. For the upcoming Congress, Hoyer was elected House Minority Whip, also the Democrats’ number two position. He is considered a bridge between the conservative Blue Dogs and the liberal wing of his party, important to Democrats to achieve consensus in the upcoming new Republican Majority House and more Republican Senate.

In response to the recession, Hoyer helped lead House passage of investments and tax cuts that non-partisan experts say are responsible for up to 3 million jobs. He made crucial contributions to the strategy for passage of the new legislation to expand access to affordable health care, as well as new rules to rein in Wall Street.

He guided passage of the historic Americans with Disabilities Act and was a lead sponsor of the Help America Vote Act, the most important voting rights legislation since the 1960s.

He believes that fiscal responsibility is critical to protect important programs like Social Security and Medicare. He helped lead restoration of pay-as-you-go, ensuring that our country pays for what it buys.
On foreign policy, as Chairman of the Helsinki Commission, Hoyer fought for international human rights. He led the bipartisan Congressional delegation to Darfur in 2007 to call greater attention to the recent genocide.
