Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will speak at a National Press Club luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 10. In a “Discussion with the Chairman,” he will cover a large range of topics relevant to today’s military.
Sworn in one year ago as the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, Dempsey is. He is a veteran of two wartime tours as a commander in Iraq and deployed with the Third Armored Division in support of Operation Desert Storm. He was on the job as Army Chief of Staff for a little more than a month when President Obama tapped him to head the Joint Chiefs after the widely rumored frontrunner, Marine Gen. James Cartwright, fell out of favor among senior defense officials.
During more than 37 years as an armor officer in the Army, Dempsey has commanded at every level – from platoon to combatant command across the United States and the globe. When he took the reins of the Pentagon a decade after the 9/11 attacks, he faced shrinking military budgets and new challenges, including the realization that if the United States becomes involved in a new armed conflict, the chances of the homeland being attacked by an adversary are high. As he told one major newspaper, the military is at “a strategic inflection point, where the institution fundamentally re-examines itself.”
Dempsey, a New Jersey , is a 1974 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Deanie. All three of their children – Chris, Megan and Caitlin – have served in the United States Army.
