Communication specialists and seasoned reporters will examine whether traditional journalism standards apply to the new social media at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the Lisagor Room. The event is free for members, $35 for non-members.
Panelists include: W. Joseph Campbell, author of "Getting it Wrong: Ten of the Greatest Misreported Stories in American Journalism"; Howard Mortman, C-SPAN communications director; Linda Feldmann, staff writer, The Christian Science Monitor; and Patrick Gavin, staff reporter, Politico. NPC Vice President Mark Hamrick will moderate.
Reservations are required for the 90-minute presentation, [email protected].
Among the questions to be explored: In the world of tweets, blogs and viral videos, can news outlets survive if they delay a story to double check the facts? Is it realistic – or idealistic – to require new media to meet traditional news reporting standards? Is it still possible in real time reporting to present fair and balanced answers to the basic questions: “Who, What, When, Where, Why.” And if so: “How?”
