Who Needs Newspapers? A Report on the Status of Newspapers in the United States

Are newspapers in America dying? Paul Steinle and Sara Brown are on a mission to find out. Since June 2010, the long-time media professionals have engaged in shoe-leather reporting by visiting newspapers across the country to take the pulse of a cross-section of dailies, weeklies, and ethnic and alternative publications. So far, they’ve visited 44 (50 is the goal) newspapers in 44 states. In the process, they have created a national, multi-media snapshot of the status of the industry on their website, whoneedsnewspapers.org.

Steinle and Brown will present their findings, to date, as well as the trends that are beginning to emerge.

Journalist and educator Paul Steinle is a former president of United Press International. Dr. Sara Brown has served as human resources manager and consultant for newspapers. The event is co-sponsored by the Club’s Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library and The George Washington University Global Media Institute. RSVP at [email protected] or (202) 662-7524.
