Beyond the excitement, NPC's Beat the Deadline 5K race supports worthy cause

The National Press Club's BEAT THE DEADLINE 5K race-walk down Pennsylvania Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 6, is right around the corner. The event annually draws hundreds of participants, and as it draws closer excitement is mounting.

Sometimes forgotten in the hub-bub, however, is the reason for the event. Proceeds from it support the ongoing work of the National Press Club Journalism Institute and its mission to the future of journalism and students like Jose Valle, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Jose won the Institute's 2014 Scholarship for Diversity in Journalism, which is given to graduating high school seniors. The scholarship provides up to $10,000 over four years. Jose plans to study at a college in North Carolina.

Here's Jose’s moving acceptance speech at the recent NPC Journalism Awards dinner:

So register now at press.org/5k to support the work of the NPC Journalism Institute and hard working students like Jose. Online donations are also accepted.

If you have questions or your organization is interested in sponsoring/donating to this year’s race, please contact the Club at [email protected].
