Institute and Club plan three-day program on helping reporters stay secure online, Sept. 25, 27, Oct. 11

The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Club's Freedom of the Press and Young Members committee are holding a three-day training session to help journalists protect their reporting in cyberspace from unwanted scrutiny.

The program will take place Thursday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Lisagor Room; Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Bloomberg Room; and Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Bloomberg Room.

Register here. The cost to attend all three days is $40 for Club members and $60 for non-members, and includes a box lunch for the Saturday sessions. The cost to attend just the Thursday evening seminar is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Club members should login for the discount code.

Attendance at the hands-on Saturday sessions will be capped at 25 people so sign-up early.

Skills that will be studied in the Saturday workshops include how to keep Internet traffic anonymous; how to encrypt instant messaging, video chat, and audio chat; how to make mobile phones more secure; and how to securely store and transfer your files.

Attendees of the Saturday workshops must bring a laptop and, if available, a smartphone. Each participant must have administrative access to their laptops. Participants should also bring a thumb drive or external hard drive to create encrypted volumes.

This program is supported by a generous grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation.
