Tonight: Photojournalist plans to show her work, discuss state of press freedom in Iran

The National Press Club Press Freedom Team presents a special talk Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. with visiting Iranian photojournalist Yalda Moaiery, who is out on bail after being unjustly arrested by Iranian authorities for her coverage of the 2022 hijab protests.

IranMoaiery plans to show samples of her photojournalism work, which have run in a wide range of publications including a recent photo essay for the Washington Post, and answer questions about the press freedom situation in Iran, in the Club's Zenger Room.

All Club members are invited to the event for a discussion on the press freedom situation and climate for female journalists in Iran. The event is free but attendees must RSVP to Rachel Oswald at [email protected].

Moaiery is the 2023 recipient of the International Women's Media Foundation's Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award, which goes to a journalist who has been imprisoned. In her roughly 20 years covering major international conflicts, Moaiery has been arrested by Iranian authorities on multiple occasions.

In September 2022 in downtown Tehran, Iran, where she was covering public protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, Moaiery was arrested and sustained injuries from Iran's morality police. She was imprisoned for months at Qarchak prison and released on bail late last December.

Moaiery continues to work while she awaits her court date and potential trial on anti-state charges.
