6:30 PM  Linda and Loretta Sanchez (NPC Book Event)
Description: California congresswomen Linda and Loretta Sanchez, the first sisters ever to serve in Congress, will present their book, Dream in Color at the National Press Club on Monday, September 15.

The Sanchez sisters' parents immigrated to California from Mexico with no formal education, yet managed to send all seven children to college. The sisters write about their rise from poverty -- against daunting odds -- and their current challenges as politicians. Publishers Weekly has called the memoir "refreshing" and a "compelling story...The Sanchez sisters vividly demonstrate the power of hard work and steady determination in this inspiring portrait of an extraordinary family."

Women's rights advocate Linda Sanchez, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of representatives since 2003, writes that the courage of her convictions is frequently tested in Congress. She is the chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, a member of the US House Committee on Education and Labor, and a member of the US House Committee on International Relations. In 2005 she was appointed Assistant Minority Whip. She is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus.

Loretta Sanchez, a Democratic congresswoman since 1997, is the second-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee and is a member of the Armed Services Committee. Loretta Sanchez is perhaps most known for her controversial 2007 withdrawal from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, alleging the caucus chairmen treated female members with disrespect. The resulting (very public) fight was covered thoroughly in the media.

This event is open to the public and free of charge, however space is limited and reservations are required. RSVP at opus@press.org. Dream in Color will be available for purchase and signing by the author at the event. As a fundraiser for the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library, outside books are not permitted.
