Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson (NPC Luncheon)
- Description: Council on Competitiveness Vice Chair Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will explain how the U.S. can achieve energy security, stimulate energy innovation and job growth, and protect the environment at a National Press Club luncheon on Sept. 9.
The "First 100 Days" energy action plan, designed to guide the next president and Congress, was devised by more than 200 corporate CEOs, labor leaders, university presidents and other energy experts. Dr. Jackson, a theoretical physicist and former chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is known for speaking out on scientific, technological and engineering gaps in the American workforce. In 2007, the National Science Board selected Dr. Jackson for its Vannevar Bush Award for "a lifetime of achievements in scientific research, education, and senior-statesman-like contributions to public policy." The National Press Club luncheon begins promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9. Dr. Jackson's remarks begin just after 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session. H.E. Alvaro Uribe (NPC Luncheon)
- Description: H.E. Alvaro Uribe, President of Colombia will address a Luncheon on Sept. 19. to discuss his country's recent economic progress and security improvements. His speech will also address Colombia's future goals and the results of its recent transformation.
The Economist reported this past July that, "Only those blinded by ideology would deny that Álvaro Uribe has made Colombia a better place," and that while Colombia still faces challenges there has been marked improvement as a result of his leadership. Uribe was elected in 2002, and prior to serving as Colombia's president he was general secretary of the labor ministry under President Alfonso Lopez Michelsen and director of civil aeronautics under President Julio Cesar Turbay. He has also served as governor of Antioquia and mayor of Medellin. As President, most recently he has been credited with significantly improving Colombia's security situation, overseeing the release of one of the FARC's most high profile hostages: Ingrid Betancourt. The National Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m., and President Uribe's remarks begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. Michelle A. Rhee (NPC Luncheon)
- Description: District of Columbia Public Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee will speak about national education reform and her drive to fix the dysfunctional school system in the nation's capital at a National Press Club luncheon on Sept. 29.
Rhee has won national attention for her bold and sometimes unpopular moves to overhaul the 50,000-student D.C. school system, including the firing of nearly 50 principals and an effort to link teacher pay to performance by raising salaries and eliminating tenure protections. She has devoted her career to improving the education of inner city children, first as a teacher in Baltimore and then as founder of The New Teacher Project, a national, nonprofit organization that helps needy school districts attract and retain teachers. James K. Glassman (NPC Luncheon)
- Description: Washington, DC -- James. K. Glassman, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, will speak at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, October 3, 2008, on "The New Age of Public Diplomacy."
Since taking up his position in June, following confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Mr. Glassman has been leading the government's efforts to win a war of ideas to combat violent extremism, and his speech will outline his views on how best to achieve this goal. Mr. Glassman has a long background in journalism, including previous positions as a syndicated columnist, former president of The Atlantic Monthly Co., publisher of The New Republic, and editor-in-chief and co-owner of Roll Call. Prior to becoming Under Secretary, he was a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and served as chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the independent federal agency that oversees all U.S. government non-military international broadcasting.
