Annual exhibit honors fallen Ukrainian photojournalist

The National Press Club's Photography Team is honoring Ukrainian news photojournalist Maks Levin at the Club's annual photography exhibit.

NPC's annual exhibit and catalog features four of Maks Levin's photos shot for Reuters. Reuters global photo editor Rickey Rogers provided the photos. The exhibit runs from Aug. 31 through September in the Club's main lobby.

Levin, a freelance photographer and filmmaker who worked for Reuters and other news services, was found dead 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Kyiv, in April 2022, reportedly captured and executed by Russian forces days earlier.

According to an investigation by the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders, Levin and a colleague were captured by Russian forces and executed on March. 13, 2022. Their bodies were found on April 1. The organization's secretary-general Christophe Deloire notes, "Analysis of the photos of the crime scene, the observations made on the spot and the material evidence recovered clearly point to an execution that may have been preceded by interrogation or even acts of torture." During 2022, according to International Federation of Journalists, 68 journalists and media workers were killed in targeted attacks, with 12 of those attacks taking place in Ukraine. Seven of the total killed worldwide were photojournalists, including Levin.
