'The Boys on the Bus' — 12 Elections Later on Jan. 30

The Boys on the Bus

Timothy Crouse's The Boys on the Bus is considered the seminal book on political campaign reporting. As we head into a new campaign season, the National Press Club's History and Heritage Team and American Heritage Magazine will be talking to three reporters who were on that bus — actually, they weren’t all boys — covering the 1972 George McGovern presidential campaign.

The program begins at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. They can be purchased here.

Edwin Grosvenor, publisher of American Heritage Magazine, plans to interview two of the boys, Carl Leubsdorf of the Dallas Morning News, and Tom Oliphant of the Boston Globe, as well as perhaps the only girl, Connie Chung of CBS News, who had just started her network broadcast career. Grosvenor and Leubsdorf are Club members.

They plan to talk about how campaigns were covered that year, why the book is so important to journalism history and how campaign reporting has changed since.
