Carter announces presidential campaign at Club event, 1974

This Week In National Press Club History

December 12, 1974: Jimmy Carter announces his candidacy for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination to the National Press Club. Two years later, Ronald Reagan announces to the Club that he will challenge incumbent Gerald Ford for the Republican presidential nomination.

December 13, 1929: The National Press Club occupies new quarters on two top floors of the National Press Building with a 99-year lease at $1.00 a year.
