Class on Obtaining Public Records, 6 pm May 24; $10 for Members

David Cuillier, chairman of the Society of Professional Journalists Freedom of Information Committee, will conduct a class on obtaining public records from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 24.

The cost is $10 for National Press Club and SPJ members, $25 for non-members. Space is limited; RSVP are required at [email protected] or 202.662.7523 along with your NPC or SPJ number.

Cuillier will offer ideas for document-based stories and strategies for effective records requests. Attendees will also learn about psychological skills for getting officials to give out information and tips for making records part of a daily routine.

Cuillier, a former reporter and editor who teaches journalism at the University of Arizona, has been a SPJ FOI newsroom trainer for five years. He is also the co-author of "The Art of Access: Strategies for Acquiring Public Records."

The event is sponsored by the Club's Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library Professional Development Committee and the Society of Professional Journalists Washington, D.C., pro chapter. The "Across America Tour" is funded by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aids SPJ and journalism initiatives, with
assistance by the University of Arizona School of Journalism.
