Club co-ed softball team has some roster spots, welcomes spectators

Feeling better about getting out in the world after your COVID-19 self-isolation? Want to play some Saturday morning softball to ease back into activities with less stringent social distancing?

The National Press Club co-ed softball team heads into the second weekend of the 2021 Metropolitan Media Softball League season with a 1-1 record. The Saturday, June 26, double-header starts at 10:30 a.m. at Aspen Hill Park in Montgomery County, Maryland. Opponents are first CNN, then Al Jazeera.

There is still room for players on the roster. Women players especially are needed so there are enough when others are on vacation.

Only a few weeks left to get in on the play (no games July 3)! This is an asterisk season with six teams in the league, all of which will make the double-elimination tournament on Aug. 7-8 at Cabin John Regional Park. Contact coach Jim Rubin at [email protected] or call him at (202) 744-0288 if interested in playing and to get information about arriving earlier for warmups and bringing your own glove, etc. No car? Often other team members can arrange rides or pickup from a nearby Metro station.

NPC's Big Blue played NPR opening weekend, splitting the day losing 8-6 and rebounding to win 5-4. Rubin observed that despite some incredulity over the umpire calling a game mid-inning, the strict 65-minute game time limit was adhered to. So, that's another plus: you can get your playing time in by 12:45 p.m. and still have lots of your Saturday free for other activities. Some teammates go for pizza and beer afterward, at their own expense, but that's optional and also a great way to get to know other Club members socially.

“So thrilled to be with colleagues on the diamond again after a pandemic-hiatus," said Laura Faul, outfielder and 11-year NPC Big Blue team member, after last week's games at East Norbeck Park off Georgia Avenue. "I look forward to the season every year, and 'Let’s play ball!'”

Want to find out if you might want to play eventually? Spectators cheering the team on are always welcome!
