Club member artist, poet to discuss their book on Metro riders, Aug. 17

Metro Anthology book

National Press Club member Carol Morgan, along with local poet Gerry Hendershot, has published a book, "METRO Anthology," which features 12 pen and ink drawings of Washington Metro riders by her accompanied by 12 poems by Hendershot.

The poems give the thoughts and concerns of persons riding Metro buses and trains, based on the expressions captured in the sketches. In January 2020, Morgan's opinion piece, "What I see when I draw on Metro," was published in the Washington Post.

On Aug. 17, 3-4 p.m., a free virtual event will feature Morgan and Hendershot talking about their collaboration, and sharing their drawings and poems.

Information about the event says the book project started about a year ago, when the Art League Gallery of Alexandria invited entries of a piece of art accompanied by poetry for their monthly show. Morgan entered a drawing, “Going Home on the Yellow Line,” and invited Hendershot to enter a poem. The work was displayed for about a month at the gallery. It was then Hendershot who suggested that the two work on a book together.

In addition to her writing and sketching pursuits, Morgan displays her artwork in local art galleries and has won awards for sculpture, painting and drawing. She recently had a bas relief piece showing at the Art League Gallery of Alexandria, in an exhibit of works by many artists inspired by themes in television shows and films.

"METRO Anthology" can be ordered online from Politics and Prose.

Morgan is hopeful she can donate a copy of her new book for viewing in the NPC library.
