Club open on Veterans Day; next week's events put focus on veterans

The National Press Club will be open on the next federal holiday, Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11, but closed the Friday after Thanksgiving. Here is a roundup of events at the Club next week that highlight the contributions of those who have served in the U.S. military, our veterans.

Monday, Nov. 7:

12:30 p.m. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will speak at a National Press Club in-person Headliners Luncheon. He will discuss the impact of the PACT Act, a bill signed in August by President Joe Biden that expands medical benefits to veterans exposed to toxins from burn pits on military bases, and deliver an update on the state of America’s veterans. To purchase a ticket, click here.

 

Thursday, Nov. 10:

noon The National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 meets in the McClendon Room. All Club members are invited to the program portion of the meeting, which will feature Voice of America Chief National Correspondent Steve Herman discussing the war in Ukraine and efforts to get accurate information into Ukraine and Russia. The meeting will be hybrid, so those unable to attend in person can join by Zoom.

 

Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11:

4:45 p.m. A panel of military veteran journalists will discuss the role of veterans in the news media, at an event at the National Press Club sponsored by Military Veterans in Journalism, beginning with a time of socializing at 4:45 p.m., and the panel discussion starting at 5 p.m. The event is free to attend, and Club members and all journalists are welcome. 6 p.m. Veteran and Chef Andre Rush collaborates with Club Chef Susan Delbert on a multi-course dinner in the Fourth Estate. Also part of the evening will be remarks and a book signing with Chef Rush, author of "Call Me Chef, Dammit." Member tickets are $78 per person (including one book) or $148 per couple (including one book). Buy tickets online. All day Second annual Run for Austin Virtual 5K to raise awareness and public support for military veteran and journalist Austin Tice, who has been unjustly detained in Syria since 2012. Runners, walkers, hikers and press freedom supporters can register here.
