Matthews is the Club’s 114th president and the third person of color to serve in that role. She also leads an all-female team of officers, which is a first in the Club’s history. She is serving as the organization continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic and a challenging media environment.

Since Matthews became president in January, she has expanded the Club’s efforts to build connections with the community, promote and defend press freedom, and spread news literacy to a broader audience.

A veteran broadcaster, Matthews is the U.S. video assignment manager at the AP. She has worked at the news service’s Washington bureau during two periods of her career for a total of more than 20 years. In between stints at the AP, she was vice president at Hager Sharp, a public relations firm in Washington specializing in strategic communications for nonprofit and government programs. She is also the recipient of two Edward R. Murrow Awards for broadcast and digital journalists.
