Club, Reporters Without Borders Host Exiled Eritrean Journalist 7 pm, April 27

The National Press Club and Reporters Without Borders will host a discussion with an exiled Eritrean journalist at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27.

The speaker will be Milkias M. Yohannes, who is currently living in Maryland. A lawyer by trade, Yohannes is the founder of Kestedebena, one of Eritrea's largest independent newspapers until it was shut down during the 2001 government crackdown.

The event is the second edition of Truth Teller, a new series of talks featuring reporters in exile taking the stand on the dangers they faced as local journalists in their home countries.

Yohannes' newspaper was one of the largest at that time, and Yohannes was subjected to numerous arrests, court cases and torture by the Eritrean Authorities. He was among the first Eritrean free press print journalist to go to jail in 1999. Currently, 26 journalists and two media workers currently held in Eritrea.
