Communicators to Discuss Newspaper Paywalls June 4

Gary Evans, a digital communications expert and former USA Today executive, will provide his perspective on the current state of the business side of journalism at the next Communicators Breakfast on Tuesday, June 4.

The breakfast will be held in the Truman Lounge. Admission is free for NPC members. The Club’s free breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. and the program starts at 8:30. Click here to RSVP (login required).

Evans, who managed paid content strategy for USA Today and is now a consultant, will speak at a time when newspapers such as the Washington Post are erecting paywalls rather than provide all of their content for free online. At the breakfast, he will discuss trends at world, national and local newspapers, and their paid content strategies, successes and opportunities.

Newspapers and magazines are trying to broaden their revenue bases because advertising revenue continues to decline and fragment, Evans said. Print sales, including single copies and subscriptions, are retreating as consumers choose other platforms to get their news and information, he said.

Evans is a frequent speaker at industry events on audience development, media strategy and business operations.
