Fall Hoot to Celebrate C-SPAN, 6:30 pm Oct 21

The Silver Owls will look at three decades of C-SPAN telecasts of the Club’s luncheons at the Fall Hoot, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. Tickets are $35.

The initial Oct. 7, 1980, telecast featured Federal Communications Commission Chairman Charles Ferris and was followed immediately by a call-in to a panel including broadcast journalist and Golden Owl Dawson (Tack) Nail. who will be inducted, along with Brian Lamb, the “father” of C-SPAN, into the Order of the Owl.

The evening will also include a screening of highlights of NPC luncheons over the 30 years. C-SPAN will be saluted in a Mae Scanlan parody sung by the Owls’ quartet. Gridiron pianist John Fluck will perform background music for the evening. The 12 Golden Owls inducted at the Spring Hoot will receive gold pins.

A cash bar and hors d'oeuvres reception is at 6:30 p.m. followed by the a roast beef dinner with wine and the program. Head Hoot John Cosgrove plans to give special recognition to young members in the Silver Owls’ effort to expose them to the Club’s history and heritage. Reserve at 202 662-7501.

People who have been members of the Club for 50 years are inducted into the Golden Owls. This years' inductees are Alan L. Dessoff, Joseph J. Hornick, Eugene H. Methvin, William Daniel Poole, J. William Poole, Franklin D. Schurz, James M. Beall, Benjamin C. West, James McCartney, James W. Canan, Ralph W. Crosby and Samuel H. Murray.
