Get wedding and event photo tips at Photo Committee meeting, Wednesday, Feb. 26, noon

National Press Club member Rex Allen Stucky will speak about wedding and event photography at the luncheon meeting of the Club’s Photography Committee on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at noon, in the McClendon Room.

Stucky is a well-known wedding photographer in the Washington area, having photographed more than 1,000 weddings, in addition to his work on portraits and corporate events. He has great tales to tell about some of those wedding shoots, including some tips on how to get the best shots.

All Club members and their guests are welcome and no reservations are required.

Stucky worked for 28 years for the National Geographic in Washington where he supervised the color print lab and produced many of the photo exhibits that were installed in the Explorers Hall at the Geographic headquarters and other locations, including the United Nations. While at the Geographic, Stucky served as a member of the press pool working with Life magazine, World Book, Associated Press, and other news agencies during the Apollo launches at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He later assembled the individual photos taken by the astronauts of the moon’s surface into the panorama pictures published in several articles in the National Geographic magazine.

Stucky had many other unique assignments while working for the National Geographic. For example, during the lead-up to the nation’s Bicentennial celebration, Stucky was asked to make a color print likeness of a very faded historical 1776 document from the National Archives of George Washington’s commission as General of the Army of the United Colonies. Stucky used an experimental photo process he devised to create this likeness, which was then carried by horseback from Philadelphia to Massachusetts in a reenactment of George Washington’s trip to take command of the troops.

In addition to his work at the Geographic, Stucky covered more than 200 formal events at the National Gallery of Art, where he photographed three U.S. Presidents, heads of state, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, and other famous guests. Pictures from these events were published in the National Gallery of Art Bulletins.

Stucky’s work has also been published in Vogue magazine, Paul Mellon’s autobiography, and also in the book, “Farewell to Jackie.” His collection of images includes more than 150 exhibition-quality photos of monuments and sites in and around Washington. Further, the National Geographic “Creative” collection contains more than 500 of Stucky’s images seen here.
