Get your best breaking news stories ready for the National Press Club journalism contest

The National Press Club seeks your best breaking news stories from 2020 for its annual journalism contest. There are separate awards for broadcast and print.

Entries will be judged for quality of reporting, speed and innovation. Particular attention will be given to reporting in the first 24 hours of coverage after a news event and the use of a variety of formats to reach news consumers.

Entries should  include no more than five stories, written or assembled under deadline pressure, covering a single event or occurrence. Material should be submitted as originally presented. A letter describing how the reporting was done on deadline is encouraged. Supplemental material should be clearly marked. Entrants must also submit passwords if they are needed to access the material online.

The deadline is April 15.

The prize for the winner in each category is a year’s free membership in the Club. The cost of an entry is free for Press Club members and $75 for non-members.

The contest includes categories for consumer news, politics, online journalism, photos, coverage of elderly issues, animal treatment and rights, humor writing, the media and other issues

The awards will be presented later this summer by the National Press Club.
