Japan officially surrenders, ending World War II, on the battleship USS Missouri.

Clifton Truman Daniel, grandson of President Harry S. Truman, will speak as part of the National Press Club’s commemoration of Japan’s official surrender on the battleship USS Missouri 75 years ago on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The surrender ended World War II.

This one-hour program will stream live at 7 p.m.on the Club website and on its YouTube Channel. It is free and accessible to both the media and members of the general public. Viewers are invited to submit their questions in advance or during the livestream by emailing their queries to [email protected].

In an event co-sponsored by the Club and American Legion Post 20, Daniel will draw from his research into his famous grandparents to give an insider’s view of what happened in the events surrounding that day.

He will also touch on the most famous photograph taken at the Club: then-Vice President Truman playing the upright piano now in the Truman Lounge with film actress Lauren Bacall sitting atop it. That photo was taken during a Club canteen, sponsored by the its American Legion post, that drew hundreds of servicemen during the war.

Daniel is the oldest son of Harry and Bess Truman’s only child, Margaret, and E. Clifton Daniel, Jr., the former New York Times managing editor. He is the honorary chairman of the board of the Truman Library, and author of two books about his grandparents. He is a frequent speaker and has portrayed President Truman on stage.
