Help defray NPC 5K security costs

One of the most amazing events at the National Press Club, our 5K race, is just around the corner on Saturday, Sept. 7. It's a fundraiser for the National Press Club Journalism Institute.

It takes a lot of people and a lot of money to put on a race like this. Let’s talk about the money first. The biggest single cost to putting on a road race in this part of town is the police footprint needed to secure the route and redirect traffic. The police cost to us for this race is more than $11,000! That is not a typo, $11,000. And you wonder why you do not see many races on these streets?

So if there is any way you can help us with that cost, please consider doing so. For example, if your company is in the security or defense business and wants to be a sponsor to help retire some of that cost, well, we would be happy to receive your contribution. Ten companies donating $500 would cut our police cost in half.

Now let’s talk about people. We need more members of the National Press Club volunteering to help at the race. We have many staff who volunteer their time on a Saturday morning already. Let’s see some more members come out to help them. It is fun to work side by side with staff to accomplish this kind of event. And it is truly amazing this race can be accomplished.

So please be part of it, run, contribute or volunteer. We need your help any way you want to give it to us. After all, this is your Club. Get involved!
