JOB POSTING: Reporter / Assistant Editor, Latin America Advisor

A Washington-based think tank, the Inter-American Dialogue engages our network of global leaders to foster democratic governance, prosperity, and social equity in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, we work to shape policy debate, devise solutions, and enhance cooperation within the Western Hemisphere. Seventeen Dialogue members served as presidents of their countries, and more than three dozen have served at the cabinet level. For five consecutive years, the University of Pennsylvania has ranked the Dialogue among the top U.S. think tanks, and last year London’s Prospect Magazine named the Dialogue “U.S. Think Tank of the Year.”

The Latin America Advisor is the Inter-American Dialogue's daily flagship publication. The Advisor is read every weekday by informed business leaders, policy analysts, scholars, diplomats and government officials. More than 100 of the Western Hemisphere's largest and fastest-growing companies subscribe as well as leading universities, and government agencies spanning four continents.

We are currently looking for a Reporter/Assistant Editor for the Latin America Advisor to write daily content for the Advisor and assist in the editorial output and production publications. Focusing on the Western Hemisphere’s most pressing economic, political and corporate issues, the publications are targeted to informed CEOs and leaders with significant business interests in Latin America. Specific responsibilities include:

Identify and contact senior-level business leaders, economists, policy analysts and government officials for the publication’s Q&A feature.
Write stories on breaking news as required by daily deadlines, and take assignments to cover a wide range of corporate, economic and political issues.
Work one-on-one with the editor to plan editorial content
Cover events pertaining to Latin America and write related articles.
Develop ideas for features and in-depth analysis articles on issues of interest to readers.
Copy edit and proofread written material, and help translate content from Spanish and sometimes Portuguese into English.
Create HTML editions of the Latin America Advisor newsletters.
Create original tables, charts and graphs, and take occasional photos for publication.
Track and respond to substantive subscriber queries, which form the basis of the publication’s prominent Q&A feature.
Build and maintain a contact database of sources.
Assist in newsletter distribution, which includes website and social media postings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is an entry-level position for an individual with an interest in journalism and in business, economic and political issues, specifically relating to Latin America and the Caribbean. Must be effective in interviewing senior executives and government officials in person and over the phone. Must possess strong news judgment; have strong research and writing skills; and be a native English-speaker with strong Spanish skills. Proficiency with desktop publishing (InDesign) and HTML (MailChimp) and websites (WordPress) would be a plus. Candidate must be independent-minded and have ability to work autonomously with minimal direct supervision. The ideal candidate will also be reliable, highly organized, have superior attention to details, as well as the ability to produce quality work while meeting deadlines. Other requirements include a bachelor’s degree, experience writing, copy editing and proofreading, and familiarity with online research, social media, and Microsoft office products.
