"The work that the Foley Foundation does to support press freedom and journalist safety is essential, and the National Press Club is excited to be a sponsor and host a team for the 5K race again this year," said NPC President Eileen Drage O’Reilly, managing editor of standards and training at Axios. O'Reilly is serving as co-captain with Mike Smith, a member of the Club's Board of Governors.

The course is flat and runs along the Anacostia River. Road access to the Anacostia National Park closes at 7:45 a.m. on race day. The nearest parking to the race site is the roller-skating rink parking lot.

“We chose Anacostia Park for its unique history, central location, proximity to Capitol Hill, and charming race venue,” said Ellen Shearer, chair of the Foley Foundation Board and professor emerita at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Foley was brutally murdered by ISIS on Aug. 19, 2014, after 21 months in captivity. He had been covering the Syrian civil war for Global Post and Agence France-Presse at the time of his capture. The Foley Foundation advocates for the safe return of all Americans held hostage and provides safety education for journalists.
