Journalism Institute publishes Annual Report highlighting 2021 impact

The National Press Club Journalism Institute strengthened its impact in Washington, D.C., and beyond through its virtual programming, daily newsletter and community groups in 2021.

In a year marked by the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, the Capitol insurrection and assault on democracy, and press freedom challenges, the Institute  served 7,330 journalists, communicators, and members of the public, as outlined in its 2021 Annual Report, released earlier this month on its website.

The report includes:

  • A look at the Institute’s 19 educational programs held in 2021, including two hands-on skills workshops;

  • A snapshot of the ways the Institute provided a sense of community as Club members and journalists worked remotely;

  • A review of joint press freedom initiatives with the National Press Club, including ongoing work to #FreeAustinTice;

  • An update on the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation’s progress in 2021;

  • Highlights from The Latest, the Institute’s daily industry and craft newsletter;

  • An overview of the Institute’s 2022-2024 Strategic Plan and Values, created and voted on by the 2021 Board of Directors; and

  • A summary of revenue and expenses.

The report highlights how the Institute aligns its activities to its mission — to promote an engaged global citizenry through an independent and free press, and to equip journalists with skills and standards to inform the public in ways that inspire a more representative democracy. As the non-profit affiliate of the National Press Club, the Institute powers journalism in the public interest.
