The battle of Brandy Station occurred on June 9, 1863, as Confederate forces moved north toward Pennsylvania, where the Battle of Gettysburg would take place the following month. The fierce all-day fight involved about 17,000 cavalry troops; it was by far the largest cavalry engagement of the war.
