Libel Law Seminar, 9:30 am Nov. 15

First Amendment expert Bruce Brown and Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, will discuss what journalists must know about defamation in the new media world at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in the Zenger Room.

The two attorneys will discuss recent developments and upcoming conflicts in libel and privacy law, especially in the context of new technologies that have revolutionized mass media. Working journalists, students and others will learn about protecting oneself against libel litigation.

Brown is a partner at Baker & Hostetler, where his practice focuses on representing newspaper and other media clients. A graduate of Stanford and Yale Law School, Brown is also a former reporter with the Legal Times and other periodicals. He is an adjunct faculty member with the Georgetown University Master's in Professional Studies in Journalism program.

Dalglish has served as executive director of the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press since 2000. She previously worked as a reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. She is a graduate of the University of North Dakota, Vanderbilt University Law School and Yale Law School, where she earned a master of studies in law.

The program is part of a year-long series on “Investigative Reporting in the New Media Environment” sponsored by the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library and the Club’s Professional Development Committee. The series is conducted through a grant from the Ethics and Excellent in Journalism Foundation.
