Mexico City Club Trip for Martin Luther King' Jr.'s Birthday Weekend 2017

Mexico City is the destination for the National Press Club's annual trip over the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday weekend January 12-16, 2017. Escape the cold weather of Washington and experience the warmth in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in North America.

The non-stop flight from Dulles to Mexico City takes only a little more than five hours, and you will be transported from the airport to the Hotel Zocalo Central where you will stay for the next four nights. Breakfast is provided daily on the trip.

The itinerary includes two full days of guided touring and one day for optional trips on your own. Highlights of the guided tours include a City Tour in the Historic Center of Mexico City, the Palacio Nacional, the Catedral Metropolitana, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes. In addition to a number of famous frescoes by eminent Mexican artists, the Palacio de Bellas Artes contains a crystal curtain carved with images of the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatepetl volcanoes. At the end of the tour, lunch will be provided at the Limosneros restaurant for a bit of Mezcal and a tasting menu of pre-Hispanic dishes. After lunch is a visit to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's home (now a museum), Casa Azul.

A day of leisure on your own provides an opportunity to visit the famous El Bazar Sabado which is filled with Mexican artists' works, jewelry, clothing and crafts. Other sightseeing options also are available.

The following day a guided tour takes you to Chapultepec Castle, which was built by Maximilian I, the first Holy Roman Emperor of Mexico in the 18th century. After the castle, you tour the National Museum of Anthropology which contains artifacts from the country's pre-Columbian heritage.
