New Orleans Mayor at Aug. 19 Luncheon

Newly elected New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will address the city's ongoing challenges at a Club luncheon on Aug. 19.

Nearly five years ago, Hurricane Katrina destroyed communities in the Gulf Coast. In New Orleans, the storm broke levees, flooding the city and washing away whole neighborhoods. Now tourism is taking a hit as vacationers worry about oil-tainted beaches and seafood from the BP oil spill.

Landrieu, two-time lieutenant governor of Louisiana, brother of Sen. Mary Landrieu, and son of former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu, won the mayor's office in a landslide election in February, but faces a mountain of problems, including a $67.5 million budget deficit and an ailing seafood industry..

The luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m.Cost of the luncheon is $17 for National Press Club members, $28 for their guests and $35 for the general public. To reserve, call 202-662-7501 or email [email protected].

To submit a question in advance, put LANDRIEU in the subject line and email it to [email protected] before 10 a.m. on Aug. 19.
