Newspaper paywalls Is topic at Communicators Breakfast tomorrow, 8 a.m.

Gary Evans, a digital communications expert and former USA Today executive, will provide his perspective on the current state of the business side of journalism at the next Communicators Breakfast on Tuesday, June 4.

The breakfast will be held in the Truman Lounge. Admission is free for National Press Club members. The Club’s free breakfast will be served at 8 a.m., with the program starting at 8:30 a.m.

Evans, who managed paid content strategy for USA Today and is now a consultant, will speak at a time when newspapers such as The Washington Post are erecting paywalls rather than providing all of their content for free online. At the breakfast, he will discuss trends at world, national and local newspapers -- including their paid content strategies, successes and opportunities.

Newspapers and magazines are trying to broaden their revenue bases because advertising revenue continues to decline and fragment, Evans has said. Print sales, including single copies and subscriptions, are retreating as consumers choose other platforms to get their news and information, he has pointed out.

Evans is a frequent speaker at industry events on audience development, media strategy and business operations.
