NPC American Legion Post 20 plans 'Gen. Pershing' address on Wednesday, Oct. 5, noon

David Shuey, an actor and historian, plans to portray Gen. John J. Pershing at the National Press Club noon on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the NPC's McClendon Room at a luncheon meeting of NPC American Legion Post 20.

All Press Club members are invited to watch Shuey's portrayal of the World War I general who, as a member of the Club, urged the establishment of Post 20 nearly 100 years ago.

"I’ve done extensive research on various military leaders from our nation’s past for my portrayals, but none rival Pershing’s variety of experiences and strategic successes,” said Shuey. “Telling his story enables me to honor this great American while enlightening others as to his many, patriotic contributions. He is someone from whom we could learn many lessons which would still serve us well today.”

Post 20, which bills itself as the"The Gen. John J. Pershing Post" because of its historical ties to the leader of the U.S. Expeditionary Force in WWI, is one of the oldest Posts established in the wake of "the war to end all wars."

Shuey, who bares a striking resemblance to the four-star general, is well-versed in Pershing's long military career and his personal life. He plans to take questions at the conclusion of his presentation. He has portrayed Pershing in parades and at patriotic events across the country.

"I must express my sincere enthusiasm for having the opportunity to re-create the general’s return to an organization that must have been significant to the real John J. Pershing," Shey said of his planned Post 20 appearance.

Pershing led African-American troops, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, in campaigns in the Western States and against the Spanish in Cuba. He fought insurgents in the Philippines and defended our Mexican border against guerrilla attacks. He trained and led countless officers who went on to greatness, including Douglass MacArthur, George Patton and George Marshall.
