NPC's American Legion Post 20 schedules talk on WWII U-Boat attacks on March 28

Maritime archaeologist Tane Casserley plans to present "World War II on America's Doorstep: U-Boats off the Mid-Atlantic Coast" at an American Legion Post 20 luncheon meeting Wednesday, March 28, at noon in the Reliable Source's McClendon Room.The presentation is open to all National Press Club members.

Casserley monitors sunken combat vessels off the Atlantic Coast for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He plans to tell the story of German U-Boat attacks on U.S. and Allied shipping off the coast of North Carolina and in other mid-Atlantic waters, and the role of his office in identifying and preserving World War II shipwrecks.

A deep water diver, Casserley specializes in deep-water archaeology and sunken warships. He has led NOAA archaeological expeditions in the mid-Atlantic, the Florida Keys, the Great Lakes, off the California coast, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and in Alaskan waters. A maritime archaeology graduate of the University of Hawaii, he holds a masters degree in maritime studies from East Carolina University.

Post 20 was founded in 1919, the same year the American Legion was started, and has been associated with the Club since. Famed World War I General John "Black Jack" Pershing was instrumental in starting Post 20. While serving in Washington after the war, General Pershing was an associate member of the Club.
