NPC's annual Civil War trip set for Sept. 8 to Antietam battlefield

The National Press Club’s 14th annual Civil War battlefield trip will be on Saturday, Sept. 8, to the Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, where the bloodiest one-day battle in American history took place on September 17, 1862.

Club members and guests will depart by bus from the F Street side of the National Press Building at 8 a.m., returning at approximately 4:30 p.m. There is no charge, but Club members are asked to bring only one guest each. Lunch will be provided.

Our guide for trip will be Garry Adelman, director of History and Education at the Civil War Trust and leading Civil War expert. He is author, co-author or editor of more than dozen books on the Civil War, including Antietam: Then and Now. Mr. Adelman was guide for the Club’s 2006 and 2007 trips to Antietam and Gettysburg, respectively.

The 12 hours of ferocious fighting at Antietam resulted in an estimated 22,720 casualties on both sides, including 3,650 dead and 1,770 captured or missing. The battle marked a turning point in the war. It ended the first Confederate invasion of the north, secured the U.S. capital at Washington from danger, and reinvigorated Union morale.

As in past years, the trip is being hosted by the Civil War Trust as part of a long-standing reciprocal arrangement with the Club.
