Paul Dickson to get award for biography of Bill Veeck

Club member Paul Dickson, author of several baseball books including the Dickson Baseball Dictionary, will receive the fifth annual Jerome Holtzman Award from the Chicago-based Pitch & Hit Club on Jan. 27.

The award is given each year to a person who reflects the values and spirit of Holtzman, the late sportswriter for the Chicago Sun-Times and then the Chicago Tribune, and who makes a significant contribution to promoting baseball in the Windy City.

Dickson won the award for his recent book, ``Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick,'' about the former Chicago White Sox owner who broke the color barrier in the American League when he signed Larry Doby in July 1947.
