In praise of bean and beets: Meatless Taco Night in Reliable Source Friday

The Reliable Source is offering something completely different for Taco Night on Friday, April 27.

During the regular Taco Night hours, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., soy and plant based proteins will replace the usual ground beef, fish, chicken or turkey. Some of the “meatless meat” will be of a ground beef-like texture; others will be combinations of beans, corn and other legumes. The regular side items will be the same: beans, cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, taco shells and tortilla chips. As usual, both a spicy mix and neutral “meat” will be offered.

The Reliable Source has been offering one of the varieties to be served, “Beyond Burger,” a beet-based product, as the vegetarian patty on the a la carte menu. This replaced the old Boca Burger. In addition, another alternative available is a black bean and corn based vegetarian burger. For this Taco Night, we thought members and their guests might like to experience what is happening in the realm of vegetable-based proteins and how much progress has been made in flavor and texture.

Next Friday, May 4, Taco Night will return to ground beef.

Taco Night is free for National Press Club members and their guests, with a minimum purchase of two drinks; in lieu of a drinks purchase, Taco Night is $8 per person. Reservations are always recommended. Phone Mesfin Mekonen, 202-662-7443
