Saturday's Book and Brunch event features tales of escape from Nazi Germany

The Books and Brunch Group will meet at noon on Saturday in the Fourth Estate Restaurant to discuss "Alex's Wake" by Martin Goldsmith.

The work is a story of two parallel journeys that were undertaken several decades apart. In 1939 Goldsmith's grandfather, Alex, and his uncle, Helmut, were among the 937 passengers aboard the ship, St. Louis, fleeing Nazi Germany. The ship's fate and that of Goldsmith's family members are traced by Goldsmith during a six-month trip following in their footsteps.

Al Teich, chair of the National Press Club's Photography Team, and his sister, Judith Teich, alsp will attend, sharing their own parents' journey escaping from the impending Nazi invasion of Poland and arriving safely in Cuba.

Books and Brunch is open to all Club members and their guests. There is no charge to attend and lunch may be purchased off the Fourth Estate luncheon menu.

RSVPs are strongly encouraged to Fay Iudicello at 703-989-4503 or [email protected].
