Schedule for July 17 5K Race; Tony's Favorite Snacks

Extreme fitness trainer Tony Horton will open the annual 5K run/walk on Saturday, July 17, with a P90X pre-race warm up at 7:45 a.m. The starting gun is at 8 a.m. with a route on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Cash awards and prizes go to top finishers and fastest and largest teams (media and non-media categories).

In addition, door prizes include dinner for four at Lia's Chevy Chase, a basket of treats delivered to your office by The Treet Shop, and confections from Cakes by Megan and The Perfect Truffle, dinners at The Caucus Room and The Capitol Grille, tickets to the Newseum, a gift certificate from Alexandria Pastry Shop, and signed books and DVD's from P90X Tony Horton and Denise Austin, Cheryl Barnes, Sen. Fred Thompson, and Andrew Young.

Schedule: Packet pick-up and registration is at the NPC from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, July 16. On Saturday, July 17, on-site registration begins at 6:45 a.m. The pre-race P90X warm-up kicks off at 7:45 a.m., and the race starts at 8 a.m. A breakfast will be served after the race. Exhibits include mini-trigger point massages by Kinection's PT, samples from Gifford's Ice Cream and Cakes by Megan, and migraine medical tips by NHTC.

Race proceeds benefit training and scholarship programs of the Club's non-profit Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library. To support the programs without breaking a sweat, register for the race even if you can't attend at www.press.org/5K.

Tony’s Top 10 Snacks


  1. My sticky bar. (Calories 389, Protein 14g, Fat total: 17 g. Recipe below.)

  2. Almond butter (thinly spread) on organic whole-grain toast

  3. Snyder's of Hanover Organic Oat Bran Pretzels

  4. Probar nutrition bar (original blend) 380 calorie and 100% vegan

  5. Protein shake: banana, half cup of frozen blueberries and strawberries, 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal, two ice cubes, protein powder, rice milk

  6. Half cup of fresh blueberries, and Food For Life's Ezekiel 4:9 cereal with almonds, mixed into 8 oz. of plain non-fat yogurt

  7. Handful of raw mixed nuts

  8. MI-DEL Honey Grahams (whole wheat; 8 crackers are 280 calories)

  9. Clif Nectar bars: I like the cinnamon pecan flavor (4 organic ingredients and 170 calories)

  10. LaraBar snackbars (ingredients: dates, pecans, and almonds; 220 calories)



Tony's Sticky Bar.
Mix 1/2 banana, 1/4 cup chunky peanut butter (organic minus hydrogenated oils, preferably), 1 cup unsweetened granola in a bowl. Spoon onto a sheet of wax paper, and roll into a hot dog shape. Freeze for 90 minutes. Eat frozen or microwave for 10 seconds. Serves two.
