Sept. 15 brings 'perfect storm' of activities to Club: Webinars on foreign aid stories, African-American perspective on Constitution; talk on journalism-to-'dark side' transition; book talk on 'The Other'

The historic peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is Sept. 15, and this year, the National Press Club is unofficially marking that date with a "perfect storm" of activities on its calendar.

In a sign of further emergence from the limitations on indoor gatherings imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic guidelines, the Club has two in-person events on the day's schedule, one of which is hybrid, and two that are online-only.

While the Wire has been promoting these events for several weeks, we thought it might be helpful to members to list these here, for your planning purposes.

Sept. 15 at the NPC:

1 p.m. online onlyWorkshop on covering foreign aid. Discover the treasure trove of data and insights about U.S. foreign aid that most journalists routinely miss during an interactive online workshop for members of the National Press Club, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Register to join.

6 p.m. in-person at Club Fourth Estate Room: MSNBC reporter Daniela Pierre-Bravo will share career advice from her book, "The Other. Her advice is directed at younger women of color, immigrants and the children of immigrants, but anyone can share her enthusiasm. Based on her own experience as an undocumented immigrant who put herself through college and achieved career success, Pierre-Bravo writes movingly of trying to fit in at work while being true to herself. Purchase your ticket and reserve your space. Club members get a discounted rate of $5.

6:30 p.m. hybrid (from Cosgrove Lounge): Broadcast Team has a dinner meeting at which former and current broadcast professionals will reflect on moving to the "dark side" (public relations) after a start in journalism. All Club members are welcome to join in. You can order food and drink on your own from the Reliable Source. For information on getting a Zoom link (if you cannot attend in person), contact NPC's Kate Helster at [email protected].

7 p.m. online onlyThe National Press Club's Member Author Book Group hosts a virtual presentation about the fourth edition of "The U.S. Constitution: An African-American Context," with author Gloria J. Browne-Marshall.  She is professor of constitutional law at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and will explore how the Constitution holds up against the complexities of 21st century American life in ways the framers could not have foretold. All Club members are welcome to contact Heather Forsgren Weaver at [email protected] to request a Zoom link and be put on the attendee list.

Be sure to check out instructions for registering for each event.

And hold onto your hats and umbrellas, figuratively speaking, in honor of the swirl of activity today.
