Established in 1799, the Washington Navy Yard is the oldest shore establishment in the U.S. Navy. It occupies land set aside by George Washington for use by the federal government along the Anacostia River. Formerly a shipyard and later a naval gun factory, it was burned during the War of 1812 to prevent capture by the British.

Today it is home of the Chief of Naval Operations and headquarters for numerous Navy commands including Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Navy Installations Command, Naval History and Heritage Command and the Navy Band.
