A snippet from National Press Club history: Gerald Ford, the Club's best presidential friend?

"Our President Ford: Although he spent less than three years in the White House, Gerald Ford may have been the National Press Club's best presidential friend. He addressed a record 15 Club luncheons, beginning when he was the House minority leader, and he attended the inaugurations of Club presidents in both 1975 and 1976. After leaving office, his foundation presented its annual journalism awards at the Club.--events he attended 13 times. It happened at the National Press Club--where news is made in the nation's capital.

This snippet was one of many put together by the late Art Wiese, who served as Club president in 1979. He was responsible for planning much of the reconstruction of the Club during its renovation in the early 1980s. In his later years, he put together a series of snippets on the Club's history. In honor of his passing last year, The Wire will run of them each week while they last.
