Three big names at Washington Post among 36 new NPC members

Among the 36 new members who have joined the National Press Club in January are three of the top people at The Washington Post. The leaders of this significant global news outlet now among the Club's ranks are Publisher Katharine Weymouth, Executive Editor Marty Baron and Dan Balz, the Post’s highly regarded political reporter, columnist and author.

The three join other Post colleagues as members of the Club, including Managing Editor Kevin Merida.

“It is an honor to add the key leaders of The Washington Post to our membership ranks for 2014. What a great start to the year,” said outgoing NPC President Angela Greiling-Keane.

Balz, who has won several significant reporting awards at NPC, follows in the footsteps of his mentor and colleague, the late, iconic political reporter David Broder, who was a long-time Club member.

Baron, who recently became executive editor, described his plans for the paper during an interview in the Club’s ballroom with Marvin Kalb last April.

Weymouth, whose family had owned the Post for generations, is now in her first year with a new owner as she looks to steer the business toward its interesting and exciting future.

“None of us knows what the precise future of the news business will be,” said Greiling Keane, ‘but the discussion about what it will become is happening right now at events and forums in our Club. We look forward to having our newest members, the leaders of The Washington Post, as part of that discussion.”
