O'Brien's distinguished career in journalism has evolved as the way we gather and consume news and information has changed. Perhaps best known for her role as anchor and documentary host on CNN and NBC, she formed the Starfish Media Group (SMG) in 2013 to produce and distribute stories she feels most passionate about. She is also a reporter for HBO RealSports and Al Jazeera, and an anchor for National Geographic Bee.

Born to Afro-Cuban and Irish parents, she has championed diversity in her career. O’Brien’s “Black in America” series on CNN was extremely successful and remains one of the network’s highest-rated programs. She continues to produce it through SMG.

O’Brien has been on a quest to define what it means to be a high-quality journalist in the modern media age. In her words, “I think everything and everyone has a story, The way to make things relevant for people is to explain it in a story.”
