The book was described by Kirkus as "a detailed, deeply reported portrait of a president willfully obstructing justice — with plenty of help." The Washington Post said the book "offers a powerful accounting of the lawlessness and chaos that is President Trump."

In "October Surprise: How the FBI Tried to Save Itself and Crashed an Election," Barrett delves into the FBI's inquiry into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and how its bungling changed the outcome of the 2016 campaign. His publisher describes the book as a "pulsating narrative of an agency seized with righteous certainty that waded into the most important political moment in the life of the nation, and has no idea how to back out with dignity."Photo of cover of the book "October Surprise"
