Washington Post reporters to discuss their new book on opioid industry on Sept. 22

Two Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters for The Washington Post reporters will discuss their new book on the opioid industry on Thursday, Sept. 22.

The in-person Headliners Book Event event featuring Scott Higham and Sari Horwitz will begin at 6:30 p.m.

They are the authors of  “American Cartel: Inside the Battle to Bring Down the Opioid Industry.”

“American Cartel” examines the role drug companies played in the epidemic of opioid addiction. Since the introduction of the synthetic painkillers in the late 1990s, more than half a million people have died from overdoses involving prescription and illicit opioids.

The book tracks a small team of DEA agents as they delve into the business of prescription painkillers, and the group of lawyers who fought to hold the drug industry accountable.

Higham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The Washington Post. He served as a lead reporter on the Post’s “The Opioid Files” series, which was a Pulitzer finalist for Public Service in 2020. His investigation into the opioid industry with CBS's “60 Minutes” received the Peabody Award, an Emmy, and the duPont-Columbia and Edward R. Murrow awards. Higham is the co-author with Horwitz of “Finding Chandra: A True Washington Murder Mystery.”

Horwitz is a four-time Pulitzer-Prize winning investigative reporter who has been at The Washington Post for four decades, where she has covered the Justice Department and criminal justice issues. She was a lead reporter on the Post’s “The Opioid Files” series, which was a Pulitzer finalist for Public Service in 2020. Horwitz has authored or co-authored three books: “Finding Chandra: A True Washington Murder Mystery,” “Sniper: Inside the Hunt for the Killers Who Terrorized the Nation” and “Justice in Indian Country.”
